Do you need a permit for a skip? Costs and waiting times explained

22 October 2026 · 3 min read

If you are putting a skip on the road, you need a permit from the council. If it is going on your own driveway, you do not. That is the short answer, and for most people it is the only part that matters.

The longer answer is where it gets expensive, because permit costs vary enormously depending on which side of a borough boundary you happen to live on, and because the waiting time can be the thing that actually derails your weekend.

When you need a skip permit

You need a permit whenever the skip sits on land the council is responsible for. That includes:

  • The road itself
  • The pavement
  • A grass verge outside your property
  • A communal parking area that the council maintains

You do not need one if the skip sits entirely on private land. Your driveway, your garden, your own off-street parking space. Nobody needs to approve that and nobody needs paying for it.

Putting a skip on the highway without a permit is an offence. The council can order it removed and issue a fine on top.

What a skip permit actually costs

Across UK councils, permit fees run from around £12.50 at the cheap end to £260 at the most expensive. The average sits near £70.

London is the most expensive region in the country, averaging roughly £101 across the 29 boroughs that charge. A few examples:

Borough Fee Duration
Redbridge £260 14 days
Havering £155 14 days
Hammersmith & Fulham £150 14 days
Kingston upon Thames £149.01 28 days
Croydon £78 –

Worth knowing: the size of the skip barely affects the fee. What sets the price is which council issues the licence. A 4 yard skip and a 12 yard skip generally cost the same to permit.

The bit people miss

A higher fee does not mean a longer permit. Wandsworth issues the shortest at 5 days. Kensington & Chelsea and Islington run to 31 days. If your job overruns the permit window you are paying again.

How long it takes to get one

This is the part that catches people out. Notice periods range from one working day in boroughs like Newham and Barnet, up to ten working days elsewhere. Five to seven working days is common in London.

Which means a skip going on the road is almost never a same day job. The council has to process the licence before the skip can be delivered, and no reputable skip company will drop one on the highway without it.

If your skip is going on a driveway, none of this applies and delivery can usually happen far quicker.

What this means if you are in a hurry

If you have a weekend clear-out planned and no driveway, the permit timeline is the binding constraint. You are looking at a week before the skip can legally arrive, plus the fee, plus the hire cost itself.

The alternative most people do not know about is a wait-and-load collection. A caged tipper arrives, a two person crew loads your waste, and the vehicle leaves. Because it never sits unattended on the highway, there is no permit to apply for and nothing to wait for.

It is not always the cheaper option, and we have written a straight comparison of skip hire against man and van collection elsewhere. But when the clock matters, it removes the council from the equation entirely.

Quick answers

Do I need a permit for a skip on my driveway?

No. Private land needs no council permission.

Who applies for the permit, me or the skip company?

Normally the skip company applies on your behalf and adds the fee to your invoice. Check whether the quoted price includes it, because plenty do not.

What happens if the permit expires before I finish?

You apply for an extension and pay again. Councils do not generally offer a grace period.

Is it the same across the UK?

No. Each council sets its own fee, duration and notice period. Northern Ireland issues skip licences free of charge.

Fees and durations quoted were accurate at the time of writing. Check with your own council before booking, as they are reviewed regularly.

Need it gone?
